Meet our expert radiologists.

Matt completed undergraduate medical training at the University of Auckland in 2009, and undertook radiology training in both Tauranga and Auckland, New Zealand, being awarded FRANZCR in 2016.  

He completed a breast imaging fellowship with BreastScreen Aotearoa NZ in 2016, and a musculoskeletal radiology fellowship in 2017 in Perth, Australia. He has worked at Bay Radiology since returning to New Zealand in 2019.

Matt has subspecialty interests in musculoskeletal, spine and breast imaging and intervention. He also works part time in the public sector, where he is head of radiology at Tauranga and Whakatane Hospitals.

Gayani completed her undergraduate medical training at the University of Auckland in 2012 and undertook radiology training in both Tauranga and Auckland. 

She completed a breast imaging fellowship with BreastScreen Aotearoa in 2020, and a musculoskeletal radiology fellowship at Auckland City Hospital in 2021. She then moved to Melbourne, Australia in 2022 where she undertook an oncology imaging fellowship at The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Gayani returned to Tauranga in 2023 to work as a radiologist at both Bay Radiology and Tauranga Hospital. 

Gayani has subspecialty interests in colorectal and genitourinary imaging, as well as musculoskeletal and breast imaging and intervention.

Dr Phil Borrie is one of the founding partners of Bay Radiology (formed in 1988). Phil has extensive experience in most areas of radiology with a special interest in mammography and musculoskeletal ultrasound.

Richard completed his medical training at the University of Otago. He undertook his radiology training in Palmerston North and Auckland and was awarded FRANZCR in 2013.

After gaining experience overseas and in New Zealand Richard joined both Bay Radiology and Tauranga Hospital in 2022.

Richard has subspecialist interests in neuroradiology, head and neck and musculoskeletal imaging.

Gerard qualified in medicine at Otago University and trained as a specialist radiologist in Christchurch, followed with two years of fellowship. One each respectively at Victoria General Hospital, Halifax Canada and the other at Mallingkrodt Institute of Radiology, St Louis, USA. Gerard is active as a Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists examiner, and an International Accreditation New Zealand adviser. Has also previously been an advisor for the Health and Disability Commissioner.

Dr Gracie Keown completed her undergraduate medical training at the University of Auckland in 2011 and undertook radiology training in both Tauranga and Auckland. 

She completed a breast imaging fellowship with BreastScreen Aotearoa in 2019, then moved to Perth and completed a diagnostic Neuroradiology fellowship with the Neurointervention and Imaging Service for Western Australia in Perth during 2022 and 2023.

Gracie returned to Tauranga in 2024 to work as a radiologist at both Bay Radiology and Tauranga Hospital. 

Guy is a graduate of the Auckland training scheme.

After working in Australia for a year, he joined the Bay Radiology team in 2007, becoming a partner in 2008 and then a Shareholding Radiologist of RHCNZ Medical Imaging Group in 2022.

Guy was Director of Registrar Training at Tauranga Hospital from 2007-2016 and is currently the Director of MRI at Bay Radiology.

Guy has sub-specialty interests in musculoskeletal, abdominal and neuroradiology imaging.

With more than 10 years delivering quality healthcare, Dr Kunaal Rajpal is Bay Radiology’s Managing Radiologist and is also a consultant radiologist at Tauranga hospital. A graduate of Otago University Medical School, he completed his specialist radiology training in both Tauranga and Auckland before joining Bay Radiology in 2014. Kunaal became a partner at Bay Radiology in 2017, then a Shareholding Radiologist when the group became part of RHCNZ Medical Imaging Group in 2022. 

Kunaal has subspecialty interests in breast and body imaging  and is an accredited radiologist with Breast Screen Aotearoa.
