What is Breast Imaging?

Breast Imaging is a sub-speciality of radiology that involves scanning the breasts for screening or diagnostic purposes. 

Our highly trained mammographers, sonographers and radiologists work very closely as part of multi-disciplinary breast care teams throughout New Zealand to ensure you have the best possible imaging and diagnostic solutions to inform and meet your individual breast-care needs.

Why have breast imaging?

Screening

Regular screening is recognised as the best way to monitor any changes within your breast. It is a reliable way of detecting the presence of breast cancer while it is still in its early stages and before a lump can be felt. Lumps in the breast are not only caused by breast cancer. They can simply be cysts or prominent breast tissue. A mammogram will help determine the nature of the lump.

Diagnostic

If you or your doctor are concerned about changes in your breast your doctor can refer you for diagnostic imaging, which is different from routine screening. Depending on your age and symptoms, this may include a mammogram or an ultrasound to start with. 
 
Common reasons for referral include:

  • A thickening or lump
  • Skin dimpling or ulceration
  • Nipple discharge or persistent nipple rash
  • Signs of infection (mastitis or abscess)
  • Non-cyclical or focal pain

Most of these changes are not caused by cancer, but it’s important to see your doctor promptly to arrange the necessary tests.
